About Dia de los muertos

Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is a 3,000-year-old Aztec celebration in honor of the deceased. Día de los Muertos is a designated time when family members and friends who have passed away are invited to join their living loved ones for a time of celebration.” This Mexican and Mexican American holiday is practiced on November 1st and November 2nd. Special festivities, food offerings, and ofrendas are built to honor the dead and remember lost loved ones.

This display will hold literature from the Pollak Library Young Adult and Juvenile collection that highlights Hispanic cultural celebrations, namely Dia de los Muertos. Other books and materials outside of this collection will also be included. In the spirit of honoring the dead, photographs of prominent Hispanic deceased individuals will also be displayed.

Included with the display will be self-sustained stations. The "Calaveras Conjuring Poems" are humorous, short poems done in satire to bring a loved one's memory to life. Along with the "Calaveras" display will be works about Jose Guadalupe Posada, who is credited with creating the Calaveras poems. Visitors will be encouraged to create their own poem and post it to the display. Along with the poems there will be a place to create papel picado, a popular decoration and printouts of sugar skulls for decorating and sharing.

The altar is traditionally created during this celebrations as a place to hold offerings and photos of deceased loved ones. The altar on this display will have similar holdings, as well as some of the books from the collection.
