Four New Databases - This semester four new web-based databases are available to CSUF faculty (and students) visiting the Library's website from offices on campus or dialing into campus computers via Titan Access. To use these new databases, visit our Electronic Information Resources web page. The four new electronic resources are:
American Chemical Society Publications - ACS Publications contains full-text articles from all 26 American Chemical Society publications from January 1996 to the current date. There are links to view PDF files with full graphics and you can search journal web editions by keywords in author, article, title, abstract, or full text. You can also browse individual journals tables-of-contents and search tables-of-contents for all journals by author or title keyword. ACSP also links to the CHEMCYCLOPEDIA Online, an annual supplement to Chemical & Engineering News, LabGuide Online (chemical manufacturer information), and Grad School Finder. Biography & Genealogy Master Index (Gale) - BGMI is an index to biographical information in more than twelve-million biographical dictionaries, who's who publications, and volumes of literary criticism. It indexes current, readily available reference sources, as well as the most important retrospective works that cover individuals, both living and deceased, from every field of activity and from all areas of the world. You can do a simple search by name or - in the extended search mode - you can limit the search to, for example, only those biographical sketches which include portraits. A list of sources indexed is available and extensive online help makes searching BGMI a breeze. JSTOR - JSTOR, a project initiated by the Mellon Foundation, is a collection of backfiles of journals, originally published in print form, in a wide range of subjects. The goal of JSTOR is to create a comprehensive digital library, building an archive of important scholarly journal literature. Currently JSTOR provides access to the past issues of 86 journals across 14 subject classifications: Anthropology, Asian Studies, Ecology, Economics, Education, Finance, History, Literature, Mathematics, Philosophy, Political Science, Population Studies, Sociology and Statistics. You may browse the full-text of individual journals or search the database by author, title, keywords, topics and dates. Information for printing articles from JSTOR is available, as is a list of publications included in the project. Literature Resource Center - Rich in features, the Literature Resource Center provides access to biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of authors from every age and literary discipline. Combining Gale's most used literary databases in a single web-based service, the LRC covers more than 90,000 novelists, poets, essayists, journalists and other writers, with in-depth coverage of 2,000 of the most-studied authors. You may search LRC by author, title, genre, literary movement or literary theme (e.g., Alcoholism, Coming of Age, Hispanic Culture, etc.), or combine criteria to create a highly-targeted custom search path, particularly for peripheral journals and annotations of one or two sentences. The results screen often provides hyperlinks to other available web resources for an individual author or you may click on Compare and Contrast to find works comparing the author with other well-known authors who write on similar themes. Coming Attractions - Coming later in the Spring semester is access to Biological Abstracts (1997- ) and the CCH Internet Tax Research NetWork. Also expect to see a more streamlined version of the Library's home page and a preview of the new CSU Pharos system. Stop the Presses! - Shortly after the publication of the print edition of Library Update, Biological Abstracts, CCH and the new streamlined Pollak Library home page became available. More details in the next issue of Library Update. Jan Zlendich |
