Collection and Processing Services - The Library's Collection and Processing Services Unit - which includes Acquisitions, Serials, Collection Development, Original Cataloging, Adaptive Cataloging, and Database Maintenance & Materials Control - has returned to the 3d floor of Pollak Library South Wing and, in most cases, occupies approximately the same locations as before the retrofit. The exceptions are as follows: Teresa Malinowski, Unit Head and Serials Librarian, is now in PL-365A, which users may recognize as part of the area formerly occupied by Interlibrary Loan. Collection Development (including Grace Bertalot, Linda Ford, and the display of current approval books) has moved into other rooms in the former Interlibrary Loan/Reserve Book Room complex (PL-365B, and PL-365C, and PL-365). Floyd Zula, Acquisitions Librarian, now occupies PL-338, which is a few doors over from his old office.

University Archives and Special Collections - The University Archives and Special Collections Section of the University Library, which had been closed since June 22, 1998, due to the earthquake retrofit construction project, will re-open at the start of the Spring Semester on February 1, 1999. This section is now located in newly reconfigured space on the third floor of the Pollak Library’s South Wing in PL-350 and PL-351. The Section’s open hours will be Mondays and Tuesdays 1:00-4:00 and Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 9:00-12:00 noon. For appointments or general information regarding collections and policies, please call the University Archivist and Special Collections librarian, Sharon Perry, at x3444.

University Archives and Special Collections’ new and immediate neighbor on the third floor will be the History Department’s Oral History Program. Information regarding the Oral History's open hours and service policies may be obtained by calling x3580

Information Technology : Studio Classroom - In late December, the temporary studio classroom in PL-102A was dismantled and relocated to PL-234. This facility is next door to a second studio classroom PL-235. Each room contains 32 PCs, an instructor’s workstation and a high-speed laser printer. Both rooms also contain ComWeb equipment, which allows faculty to show students information from a variety of media as well as display student information to the entire class. Both rooms are scheduled for classes this spring.

Arrangements to hold classes, lectures, or other events in the rooms may be made by contacting Shannon Glaab in the Scheduling Office at x2381 before the beginning of each semester. After the second week of the semester, the classrooms may be reserved by calling Kathy Morris at x2855. The technical equipment is managed by the staff of the Titan Computing Lab, under the direction of Jay Jimenez. Contact Jay, x3923, for more information about the technical capabilities of the rooms.

Titan Help Desk - To better serve the campus community and accommodate additional staff, the Titan Help Desk has relocated from McCarthy Hall to the second floor of Pollak Library South Wing. Supervisor Chris Manriquez anticipates that 5-7 new consultants will join the Titan Help Desk in the next few weeks. He further reports that several of the current staff are in training to receive MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) certification this spring. The Titan Help Desk is also where faculty and staff sign up for Titan Internet Access. The phone number for the Titan Help Desk remains x7777.

New Information Kiosks- Collections and people have been moving around lately in the library. In time for the beginning of the Spring Semester you will have a new way of navigating to the library location you are trying to find. Information kiosks, similar to those you may have used in airports or shopping malls, have been placed at several strategic locations in the Library. With a touch of the screen you can find office numbers for library faculty and staff, detailed floor maps, answers to frequently asked directional and factual questions, and the daily Library instruction schedule. Please give it a try and let us know how we can make it even more helpful.
