Free Article Delivery for Graduate Students - To complement traditional Interlibrary Loan and the availability of electronic journals and full-text article databases available in-house, the Library is experimenting in meeting the needs of graduate students through CARL UnCover, a document delivery service already available free of charge to faculty. During the Spring Semester, the Library will launch a pilot program to provide free and unmediated article delivery for graduate students.

CARL UnCover - Searchable on the Web via the Pollak Library web site, CARL UnCover contains millions of article citations from over 17,000 periodicals. During the Spring Semester, graduate students will have the opportunity to order free copies of articles from most of the over 17,000 periodicals included in the CARL UnCover database (“most” since some publishers do not allow telefacsimile transmission of articles). Articles are usually available within 24 hours (or less), and can be sent to any fax number the student specifies.

Funding - This program is being supported with new funds allocated to the Library by the campus for this purpose. At the end of the semester, the program’s effectiveness will be assessed. Based upon feedback provided by those participating in the program, the Library will determine whether to continue and expand this program, or to consider other article delivery options to assist graduate students in meeting their informational needs.

How to Participate - All CSUF graduate students may participate in this document delivery pilot program. However, only those who attend one of the workshops the Library will be offering starting in the third week of the semester will actually be enrolled in the program and eligible to order free article delivery through CARL UnCover. Between eight and ten workshops designed to train students in the effective use of this service will be offered. Students may signup for the workshops on a first-come, first-served basis by visiting the CARL UnCover Program pages on the Library’s web site.

How It Works - Students participating in the pilot program will be entitled to order up to ten articles over the course of the semester, although they will not be able to order articles in journals already available to them in the Pollak Library or articles for which an extraordinary premium (over $50) is charged by CARL UnCover. While students can specify that their articles are sent to any fax number they wish, those students who do not have access to a fax machine will be given the telephone number for Interlibrary Loan’s fax machine and may pick up articles they order through CARL UnCover from the Interlibrary Loan Office.
