Located in the basement of Library-North, the movable Compact Stacks area houses the Library's pre-1975 periodicals, indexes/abstracts, and government documents. An exception to the 1975 cut-off date was made this past summer. The Library moved periodicals dated 1975-1979 within the S-V call number ranges from the 2nd floor Periodical Stacks to Compact Stacks. These periodicals cover the subjects of engineering, military science, and naval science. The move helps to alleviate crowded shelves in these call number ranges, containing titles with high publication frequencies.

The University Library plans to expand access hours in Compact Stacks to include evenings and weekends. Since November 1997, Compact Stacks has been open to the public from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Starting later this semester, Compact Stacks will become an open access area, accessible to the University community during all hours the Library is open.

The Compact Stacks function as a self-service facility. There is a telephone (x5055), an OPAC terminal, and signage directing users to appropriate sections for assistance. Please call the Periodical Services Desk (x2626) for information regarding periodical location, the operation of the movable stacks themselves, and OPAC terminal problems.
