Seismic II Project - The second phase of the Library Seismic Retrofit and Renovation Project (Seismic II) is well underway. The Project began in June when personnel and materials from the 3rd, 4th, and portions of the 5th floor were temporarily relocated in other parts of the Library. With the completion of the 4th floor renovation, all books (call numbers M-Z) were moved from the 5th floor to the 4th floor so that work to reinforce the 5th floor could be undertaken. Once this is accomplished (estimated to be sometime in December), portions of the book collections on the 4th and 6th floors will be relocated to their new permanent 5th floor stacks. A campus-wide e-mail announcement will be made prior to this move, to advise faculty and students of the temporary unavailability of certain portions of the book collection. As with the earlier move, the duration of this activity is expected to be approximately one week. Finally, by the completion of Seismic II, the remaining books on the 4th and 6th floor stacks will be redistributed in expanded stack spaces. In addition, 3rd floor services and collections, including Special Collections and Oral History, will return to expanded and renovated spaces.

Build-Out of 2nd Floor - During the late spring and summer months, the offices of Information Technology and the Faculty Development Center joined the Library Administrative offices in their new spaces on the 2nd floor of Library-South. Further "build-out" of the 2nd floor is now being undertaken in conjunction with Seismic II work. The scope of this renovation will include the construction of two Studio Classrooms (one to replace the existing temporary Studio Classroom in Library-North); the creation of new spaces for Information Technology operations now located in the basement of McCarthy Hall, such as the "Help Desk"; and the relocation of several group study rooms eliminated by Seismic II work on the upper floors of Library-South.

All construction and relocations are anticipated to be completed prior to the beginning of the Spring Semester. The Library faculty and staff appreciate your patience during these sometimes disruptive building projects. We trust the final results--a much safer and improved facility—will swiftly dim the memories of noise and dust.
