The Library continues to experiment with effective means of communicating with the campus and the community. This is the first issue of our newsletter to be designed and edited by the newly constituted Library Publications Board, and this issue is also the first to appear on the Library's Web site. Please see elsewhere the article detailing the scope and new features to be found on the Library's Web presence. The Library welcomes your comments about these communication channels and your suggestions for improving them.
Anyone venturing close to the Library since late in February cannot have escaped noticing that it has again become a construction site. A fence now surrounds Library-South on three sides and entrance to the two buildings is through either the new east or west atrium doors of Library-North. This year-long project will include the dropping to grade of exterior shear-walls, the placing of several new support columns in the basement and first floors, strengthening of the exterior walls on the first and second floors (a later project will do the same for floors 3-6), complete renovation of the basement and creation there of new quarters for the Learning Technology Center (LTC) and parts of the Computer Center.
In addition, there will be extensive remodeling on the second floor to house the combined administrative functions of the Library, the Computer Center, and the LTC. The initial impetus for this project was the need for seismic strengthening of the building, and this project is also being used as an opportunity to improve the utilization of space, especially in the basement, first, and second floors.
Visitors to the building this semester will also have noted some rearrangement of Library functions to accommodate the construction. The Library's administrative offices have been moved from the second to various places on the first floor. Circulation has been moved twice to different locations on the first floor-once to facilitate the closing of the south entrance/exit doors, and more recently to clear space for column construction. I invite your reactions to the current "temporary" location of the main Circulation counter facing the elevators in Library-South. Many have suggested that what was conceived as a construction adjustment should remain as a permanent "feature."
Great effort has been made, working with the contractor (Swinerton and Walberg, the same firm that constructed Library-North) to minimize disruptions to library services during the seismic project. However, it is never possible to undertake major construction without some resulting noise, dust, smells, or other dislocations. So, please bear with us as we progress towards completion of a project that will improve the safety of Library-South and improve our ability to provide information services to the campus and beyond.
