Circulation Services
Circulation is on the move again! -- Circulation staff had just settled into a snug corner in Library-South near the new lobby in December and were getting comfortable in the new spot, when it became apparent that the Seismic Reconstruction project would require more space than was originally planned. Consequently, we had to look for a new location where Circulation would still be visible and provide efficient service.
We put everything on wheels and moved Circulation to a temporary location in a square in front of the elevators in Library-South. This would be convenient for patrons bringing their books down from the stacks to check out, yet still be somewhat visible to those entering the Library.
Circulation staff, with the able help of student assistants, accomplished the entire move on March 24, the first day of Spring Break. It took another two days to get the OPAC terminals connected and working. By Wednesday, March 26, the area was almost fully functional-except for the lack of phones, but we all needed the exercise of running back and forth between the Circulation Desk and the phones in the old location.
Ups And Downs In The Reserve Book Room -- One of the longterm goals of the Library has been to bring the Reserve Book Room to the first floor where it would be more accessible to users. We thought we had accomplished this aim in January when Reserve was moved to Library-South across from the Circulation Desk. Students were just getting used to the new accessibility of Reserve when construction plans interferred again and it became necessary to vacate the newly established area. The weekend before the start of the Spring semester, Reserve was moved back to its original location on the third floor of Library-South where it will have to remain for at least a year.
The future for Circulation Services -- Looking on the bright side, these moves have given Library staff and users the opportunity to observe the service and work patterns of Circulation and Reserve in different locations. We are now working on plans for the area after the first floor reconstruction is complete. During the summer of 1997, you will see the new and improved Circulation/Reserve area begin to take shape on the first floor of Library-South, and much of it should be in place for the beginning of the Fall 1997 semester.
