Proxy Server Expands Remote Access to Electronic Resources -
The Pollak Library has developed a new proxy
server system to enable all valid CSUF users to gain access to
IP-authenticated Library databases, to complement the existing Titan
Internet Access service for remote users. While all CSUF faculty and staff
are eligible for Titan Internet
Access at no cost (it is supported by the University), students
must pay $15 per month for this service. For various reasons (cost, speed,
convenience, etc.), many students and some faculty/staff would prefer to
gain access to Library resources through another Internet service
provider. The proxy server allows users of any method of Internet service
(cable, DSL, ISDN, or dial-up) or any provider (AOL, EarthLink, PacBell,
etc.) to be recognized as a CSUF user by the database services to which we
subscribe. This alternative means of access may be of particular interest
to those who need to conduct research when traveling outside the Titan
Internet Access service area, e.g., while on sabbatical or attending
conferences.
Proxy
server access is now available to all CSUF users, following an
experimental period during the Intersession. We are publicizing this new
service - now in a beta testing phase - which we believe will be very
popular with some users, in a variety of ways. In addition to this
article, we will:
- Send out a special
Postmaster message to the campus
- Highlight it in the
“What’s New” section of our Home Page
- Provide a separate web page
describing the service
- Offer printed
instruction sheets for use of the proxy server, based on the Web page
information
- Assure that “Help
Desk” (278-7777) personnel can provide technical assistance to users
of the service
- Acquaint users with
the service at the Reference Desk and other service points, and in
Library instruction sessions.
You may proceed
directly to instructions for using this service at http://www.library.fullerton.edu/csufproxy/connectfromhome.htm
If you personally have
access to an Internet service provider other than Titan Internet Access,
you may wish to experiment with that provider to use various electronic
databases. You should note that not all Internet browsers are supported on
all platforms; however, the directions at the site listed above make these
distinctions very clear.
Should you have
technical questions regarding the set-up or configuration of this service
on your computer, please contact the Titan Help Desk via telephone at
714-278-7777 or via e-mail at helpdesk@fullerton.edu.
To provide feedback or request further information about this new service,
please contact the Library Systems office at librarysystems@fullerton.edu.
