DVDs and laserdiscs in the AV section are mostly feature films (theatrical movies) recommended by Theater/Film faculty for student review. The collection is not as large as retail DVD rental stores, so click here for details on finding DVDs/laserdiscs not owned by the Library. Laserdiscs are kept on the open shelves, but DVDs are not, due to security concerns. You may ask for them at the service desk.
How DVDs and laserdiscs are arranged on the shelves:
Like videotapes, DVDs
and laserdiscs are shelved by LC call number which arranges them by subject. However,
since most of the DVDs and laserdiscs are theatrical movies, they all begin with
the same number-PN1997 (or PN1997.2 for films produced after 2000) - which is the
call number for feature films. This means you would find a movie like Star Wars
in PN1997, not in the subject area of TL790, Space Flight.
How to search for laserdiscs and DVDs:
Go to the Library Catalog. Limit your search to the AV section. Do a
keyword search and type in any words of a title or topic you want, but also
type and laserdisc or and DVD to limit your search to laserdiscs or
DVDs. For a current list of all laserdiscs, in alphabetical order, click here; for DVDs, click here.
